How We Made It

Built from the original instruments.

Thriller is not a track you can fake with presets. Every sound on it is a decision — a particular synth, a particular player, a particular room. So we didn't sample it. We rebuilt it by hand, on the instruments the record was made with.

A month on one song

Doctor Mix spent a full month in the London studio taking Thriller apart and putting it back together. Not a loop-and-layer job: every part re-played, re-recorded and re-mixed until it sat exactly where the original sits.

Played, not sampled

The pads and the stabs are a Roland Jupiter-8, programmed from scratch until the patch matched. The bassline is a Minimoog, played rather than drawn in.

The drums are a LinnDrum — the machine itself, not a sample of one. Over the top: Rhodes, a live brass section recorded on camera, and electric guitar.

What you actually get

The whole session: 45 stems at 24-bit / 44.1 kHz, plus every MIDI part. Mute a lane and it's gone. Solo the Jupiter and you hear how the patch was built. Load the MIDI into your own synths and the arrangement is yours to take apart.
